FAQs

  • A tool library provides equitable access to DIY tools and resources by loaning tools and equipment to community members. Many tool libraries also host educational workshops on topics such as tool use and safety. Tool libraries are increasing in popularity with over forty locations in the US, plus many in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

  • Tool libraries stock a wide range of equipment that many homeowners, renters, and DIYers find useful, such as automotive, carpentry, drywall, electrical, gardening, and plumbing tools.

  • Anyone that resides within the library’s service area can become a member. To become a member, a person provides their information and pays an optional membership fee. These fees are often on a sliding scale to accommodate varying income levels.

  • A member can borrow tools at no cost, up to a set period of time (usually a week). If the tool isn’t returned within that time, then a late fee is incurred. Late fees vary, often between $1-$5 per tool, per week.

  • The library is operated by volunteers that assume various roles, such as tool librarians, repair gurus, and board members.

  • Many of the tools, particularly during startup, are donated by businesses, estate sales, and community members. The library purchases tools to fill the gaps in inventory that donated tools don’t cover. The purchasing and repairing of tools is an ongoing expense for tool libraries.

  • The startup funds for a tool library are often provided by grants and fundraising. The operating costs for an established library are mostly paid with donations, membership fees, and late fees.

Borrowing has benefits…

EQUITY

Buying tools is expensive and a privilege that not everyone can afford. We increase access to tools so that everyone can improve their lives.

SPACE

Having a place to store tools may not be feasible for everyone. As a member of the tool library, you have access to many tools you may not have the space for at home.

SUSTAINABILITY

By sharing tools, we’re actively reducing our community’s environmental impact. We put unwanted tools to use and keep them from ending up in the landfill.

EDUCATION

The tool library is a place to learn. Ask questions and engage with our volunteers. We plan to offer educational workshops on tool use, safety, and DIY projects.
